A Haddenham couple, Victor and Denise Braybrook, have celebrated a remarkable 70 years of marriage, crediting music and dancing as the foundation of their enduring partnership. Victor, 93, and Denise, 91, who tied the knot in Aldborough Hatch, London, in 1956, marked their platinum anniversary by performing a special waltz.
Their love story began when they were teenagers, meeting at a party. Denise vividly recalls being 16 in 1951, walking downstairs in her family home and being captivated by Victor playing Richard Addinsell's 'Warsaw Concerto' on the piano. Victor expressed his gratitude, stating, "I'm so thankful that she fell in love with me and she's been such a wonderful wife all these years." Denise, reflecting on their milestone, shared her disbelief at celebrating seven decades together.
The couple's shared passion for dancing blossomed in their late teens and early twenties when they began attending ballroom classes. While this initially lapsed, their dedication to dance reignited in their forties, leading them to take lessons "properly" and even enjoy dancing holidays. Denise expressed her fondness for various ballroom styles, including the waltz, quickstep, and foxtrot.
Originally from Dagenham, London, and Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, respectively, the Braybrooks have built a life together that has clearly been enriched by their mutual interests. Their commitment to each other and their shared hobbies serves as a testament to the strength of their bond over seven decades.
To commemorate their significant anniversary, Victor and Denise were asked to perform an anniversary waltz during a class at the Sutton Royal British Legion Club, near Ely, where they are regular attendees. This special moment underscored the role that dancing has continued to play in their lives, symbolising their journey together.
