England captain Harry Kane has revealed his hope that Oasis's iconic track 'Wonderwall' will become the unofficial anthem for the Three Lions' World Cup campaign. His comments follow a dominant start to the tournament, which saw England secure a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening Group L fixture in Dallas on Wednesday.
Kane was particularly moved by the post-match celebrations, where the victorious squad sang along to 'Wonderwall' with supporters at the Dallas Stadium. The striker, who netted twice during the match to equal Gary Lineker's record of 10 World Cup goals, described the moment as one of his favourites in an England shirt, especially at a major tournament.
Speaking on the Lions Den, Kane reflected on the emotional connection forged with the fans. "I know it’s just the first game, and we’re not getting carried away, but just that emotional connection with the fans, we know how much it means to them. I think they see how much it means to us," he stated. He added that the shared experience of singing 'Wonderwall', with everyone knowing the words, felt truly special and indicative of the strong support, both in the stadium and back home in the UK.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has been actively working to foster a strong sense of "brotherhood" within the squad, building on the foundations established during the 2018 World Cup under Sir Gareth Southgate. Kane, one of only three players remaining from that 2018 squad alongside Jordan Pickford and John Stones, highlighted a "freshness" and renewed energy within the current group. He noted that this squad feels "a little bit different," with the more experienced players taking on new roles and a palpable hunger and desire from the newer members.
The squad's depth and competitive spirit were evident in the Croatia match, with substitutes Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Morgan Rogers all making significant contributions from the bench. Kane emphasised the importance of every player throughout a tournament, whether they are starting, coming off the bench, or training. He believes the team has set a high standard for each other, creating a great environment to be a part of.
