Thousands of babies and children are reportedly missing vital appointments due to a health visitor strike in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg area. Approximately 100 health visitors have been on strike since February 2026 in a dispute over job grading, which they say is causing them to lose up to £9,000 a year.
The number of health visitor visits in the region, which includes Bridgend county, Merthyr Tydfil, and Rhondda Cynon Taf, significantly decreased. Between March and May 2026, 909 visits were conducted, compared to 6,140 during the same period in 2025.
Mothers Matter, a mental health charity for new mothers, has reported that demand for its services has "double, if not treble" during the strike. The charity also stated that the situation is straining its team and making it difficult to retain staff and volunteers.
The health board has established a single point of access to provide advice, guidance, and support, aiming to respond to inquiries within two hours. They state that their priority during the industrial action is the safety and accessibility of services for families.
