Healthleap Secures $38 Million to Expand AI Patient Risk Platform

Healthleap, a startup that uses AI to identify hospital patients at risk of undiagnosed illnesses, has raised $38 million in new funding.

  • Healthleap's AI platform analyses patient records to flag potential undiagnosed conditions.
  • The company has secured $38 million in seed and Series A funding.
  • The platform is currently deployed in over 50 hospitals.

Healthleap, a startup focused on using artificial intelligence to identify hospital patients who may be at risk of undiagnosed illnesses, has raised $38 million in new funding. This financing includes an $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, alongside a $30 million Series A round led by Hummingbird Ventures.

The company's platform integrates with a hospital's electronic health record system. It uses language models to extract information from clinicians' written notes, such as mentions of poor appetite or difficulty swallowing, and combines this with structured data like lab results and vital signs. This analysis helps to identify patients who may require a closer review for conditions like malnutrition or delirium.

Healthleap's software is currently used in more than 50 hospitals, where it screens patients for conditions including malnutrition and delirium. The company has also developed programs for identifying aspiration pneumonia, pressure ulcers, and the risk of readmission for congestive heart failure, which are undergoing further clinical validation.

The startup plans to use the new capital to invest in engineering, product development, sales, and customer success. Healthleap aims to expand its support to cover over 40 major health conditions and intends to move into outpatient and home care settings.

Why this matters: Malnutrition, a condition the platform screens for, is reportedly undiagnosed in 20% to 50% of hospital inpatients and has been linked to longer hospital stays, impaired wound healing, infections, and higher morbidity and mortality.
