Dr Sanjana Kochhar, a GP from Liverpool, has given birth to a baby girl. Dr Kochhar had been days from death before undergoing an emergency heart transplant in October 2022.
She suffered multiple organ failure while in hospital and was discharged on Christmas Eve 2022. Her daughter was welcomed in August, and Dr Kochhar has since visited a special living memorial bench in Liverpool, named in her honour by the British Heart Foundation.
Dr Kochhar stated that the bench serves as a reminder of her journey and expressed hope that it would encourage others to discuss heart disease and organ donation. She was 29 and at university when she began experiencing heart palpitations and breathlessness, leading to her critical hospitalisation.
She was placed on the urgent heart transplant list and received a donor heart four weeks later. Dr Kochhar described the experience of being so ill as "terrifying" and expressed gratitude to her donor and their family.
