The number of excess deaths caused by heatwaves in England has almost doubled so far this year compared with 2025, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
A report estimates there were 2,877 heat-associated deaths during heatwaves in May and June 2026. This figure is nearly double that reported for UK heatwaves between June and August last year.
An estimated 753 deaths were associated with the heatwave from 24-27 May, with a further 2,124 linked to the heatwave from 21-28 June. The report notes that these interim figures are already approaching the annual record reported by UKHSA in 2022.
The June heatwave peak led to an unprecedented three consecutive days of red warnings from the UKHSA and the Met Office. These warnings indicate danger to life for all, with particular risk to young and old people, and those with underlying illnesses, from high temperatures and humidity.
