The UK's sizzling heatwave has been dealt a dramatic twist as six regions are bracing themselves for thunderstorms and heavy downpours. A Met Office yellow warning has been issued for Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire, with the worst of the weather expected between 10am on Tuesday and 10pm.
The affected areas can expect gusts of up to 60mph, leading to potential power cuts and transport disruptions. Residents are being advised to stay prepared for flash flooding in some areas, while temperatures continue to soar – reaching highs of 28°C in parts of the north-west.
Breaking down the regional forecast:
- England: The Met Office is forecasting heavy rain and strong winds in the north-west, where 28°C is predicted. Meanwhile, the south-east will remain drier but hot, with highs reaching 25°C.
- Scotland: Heavy rain and gusts are forecasted for the west, where temperatures may reach 18°C. The east, however, is expected to be drier but cooler at 15°C.
- Wales: Residents in the north can expect heavy rain and strong winds, with temperatures reaching 20°C. The south will remain drier and hotter, with highs of 22°C.
- Northern Ireland: A similar pattern is expected, with heavy rain and gusts forecasted for the north and cooler conditions in the south, where 15°C is predicted.
