The blistering heatwave sweeping across the UK has taken its toll on the rail network in the Thames Valley, with Great Western Railway (GWR) warning passengers of potential delays and cancellations. The cause? High temperatures causing railway tracks to expand and buckle, prompting speed restrictions to ensure safety.
Affected services include key routes linking London Paddington with Oxford, Great Malvern, and Bedwyn – meaning commuters are advised to check live journey information before heading out.
The rail network's infrastructure was largely designed for cooler climates, leaving it vulnerable to extreme heat. Track temperatures can be a scorching 10-15°C higher than the air temperature, increasing the risk of track deformation.
Rail operators frequently implement temporary speed limits when tracks reach critical temperatures – a measure that, while essential for safety, inevitably leads to longer journey times and potential network delays.
GWR has apologised for any inconvenience caused and is urging passengers to plan ahead. Those with advance tickets who choose not to travel may be eligible for refunds or flexible rebooking options as conditions continue to unfold.
