A sizzling heatwave is set to grip the UK this week, with temperatures soaring to 30°C in some areas and widespread disruption expected on the roads. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for large parts of the country, with the RAC predicting a 20% increase in breakdown callouts compared to a typical Monday in late June.
The AA is urging motorists to be prepared for a busier day than usual, with more people on the move and a higher chance of breakdowns. 'We expect to see gritters out on the roads due to heat haze and slippery conditions,' said an AA spokesperson.
Motorists are being advised to take precautions to stay safe in the heat, including checking their vehicle before setting out, keeping an eye on the weather forecast, and ensuring they have enough water and snacks to stay hydrated. The Met Office has also issued guidance on how to beat the heat, such as staying indoors during the hottest part of the day and avoiding strenuous activity.
The extreme weather is expected to affect all four countries of the UK, with England particularly in the south set to feel the worst of it. Temperatures are forecasted to reach 26°C in some areas of Scotland, 28°C in Wales, and up to 25°C in Northern Ireland. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for the south of England, while a yellow warning is in place for the rest of the country.
Motorists are being urged to check the latest weather forecast before setting out and plan their journey accordingly.
