Heatwaves causing surge in sticking and unlockable doors across UK

Locksmiths across the UK are reporting a significant increase in callouts due to doors expanding in the hot weather, making them difficult to open or lock.

  • Locksmiths are experiencing a notable rise in calls related to heat-affected doors.
  • Both uPVC and composite doors can expand in high temperatures, causing them to bind with frames.
  • Wooden doors can shrink in the heat, leading to misalignment and lock issues.

Locksmiths nationwide are seeing a surge in callouts for sticking or unlockable doors, a problem attributed to the very hot weather experienced across much of the UK over recent months. Alan Hickman, a Bournemouth-based locksmith, reported what feels like double the usual number of calls, with customers unable to open or close doors until they cool down.

Steffan George, managing director of the Master Locksmith Association (MLA), confirmed this pattern is widespread, particularly in areas with the highest temperatures. An MLA Facebook post addressing uPVC door locking issues received tens of thousands of views, significantly more than typical traffic.

The issue stems from basic physics: heat causes materials to expand. uPVC and parts of composite doors can expand and bind with their frames, making them awkward to open. This is particularly common for south-facing or dark-coloured doors, which absorb more heat.

Conversely, wooden doors can shrink in high temperatures as moisture is drawn out, especially if not well-maintained. This can cause doors to drop, straining locks and making them stiff or impossible to operate. Shane Hales, an MLA-affiliated locksmith in Sidcup, Kent, noted his heat-related door adjustments have doubled this summer.

Locksmiths can typically fix sticking doors by realigning them or adjusting hinges. Experts advise seeking professional help promptly, as forcing a misaligned door can damage the lock and lead to more costly repairs.

What this means for you: If your doors are sticking or difficult to lock, particularly after a hot day, it may be due to heat expansion or shrinkage. Seeking professional help early can prevent further damage to your locks.
