Gus Bodur, affectionately known as Gussy the Ice Cream Man, has been a familiar sight on London's streets for over five decades. Born in Whitechapel, he started trading with his father from 14 years old during summer holidays, and now passes down the family business to his children.
As temperatures soar above those recorded in 1976's heatwave, Gus and his family are struggling to keep cool while working on their van. His top tip for beating the heat? Drinking plenty of water and wearing a damp flannel on his head.
The Bodur family is striving to get their products onto supermarket shelves, but the current heatwave poses a significant challenge for all ice cream sellers in London. 'We're just doing our best,' Gus says philosophically.
Despite the difficulties, the family remains dedicated to their business and community. Long-standing customers often bring their children to the van, and Gussy's loyal following has been built over years of serving ice cream from his Brent Cross Town parlour.
The heatwave has highlighted a peculiar aspect of Londoners' tastes: the enduring popularity of Mr Whippy with a Flake and red sauce remains unchanged despite the rising temperatures.
