UK potato growers are facing substantial losses this summer as prolonged heatwaves cause plants to shut down and potentially die. Farmers report that potato crops become stressed and cease to grow when temperatures exceed 23C, preventing the crucial tuber bulking stage. This widespread issue is leading to fears of significantly reduced harvests across the country, with some predicting losses of up to 40% or more.
Philip Pryor, who cultivates approximately 1,000 acres of potatoes in Cornwall, expressed deep concern, stating that later crops are unlikely to yield their full potential. Chris Dustow, managing a 400-acre family farm near Lostwithiel, Cornwall, elaborated on the physiological impact, explaining that potato plants "literally die" in the warm weather, remaining dormant and stressed in the fields. He anticipates a failure of three to five tonnes of crops per acre from his April to May plantings, highlighting the critical loss of valuable growing time.
The current meteorological conditions, marked by high temperatures and a lack of significant rainfall, are accelerating the senescence, or dying off, of potato plants. This premature decline means that tubers are not developing to their full size, directly impacting the overall yield. Growers are now grappling with the challenge of fulfilling existing commitments to customers amidst a backdrop of diminishing crop potential.
The Met Office has issued various weather warnings across the UK in recent weeks, indicating prolonged periods of high temperatures. While specific high-temperature warnings for 20 July 2026 are not currently active, the preceding weeks have seen heat advisories for regions including parts of England, particularly the South West, and some areas of Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland have also experienced warmer-than-average conditions, though the most intense heat impacting potato crops has been concentrated in the southern parts of Great Britain.
For growers, the situation remains precarious. Continued dry and hot weather in the coming days could exacerbate the problem, turning an already serious situation into a critical one. Practical advice for farmers, where possible, includes optimising irrigation to mitigate stress, although this is often limited by water availability and the sheer scale of the heat's impact on plant physiology.
