The Met Office has sounded a high alert for heavy rain this Friday, warning residents across Northern Ireland, Wales, and northern England to batten down the hatches. With up to 70mm of rainfall predicted in some areas over just 12 hours, experts warn of localised surface water flooding and disruption.
Forecasters expect between 20mm and 30mm of rain to fall widely within the warning areas, but isolated spots – particularly over higher ground – could see accumulations of 40mm to 50mm. Such volumes increase the risk of homes and businesses being affected by flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage or where the ground is already saturated.
Areas like Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and parts of Yorkshire are included in the warning for England, while Wales faces widespread heavy rain from Anglesey to Cardiff. Northern Ireland can expect a day-long deluge.
The heavy rainfall will make driving conditions hazardous due to standing water and reduced visibility, potentially impacting road travel and public transport services. Residents living in areas prone to flooding are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts, plan journeys carefully, and take precautions such as securing outdoor items and clearing drains.
Temperatures on Friday are expected to range from around 10C in the north to 16C in the south, with moderate winds of 10-20 mph gusting higher in exposed coastal areas.
