Wet weather is forecast for parts of the UK, with heavy showers expected to bring a risk of flash flooding, hail, and lightning. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated across north-west England, Northern Ireland, and southern Scotland.
On Tuesday, northern and central parts of the UK will start wet, with Scotland and Northern Ireland experiencing showers throughout the day. By Wednesday, an area of low pressure will bring sunny spells and frequent showers to north-west England, Northern Ireland, and southern Scotland, some of which will be heavy and thundery.
Thursday will see showers become more widespread as low pressure moves southwards. Thunderstorms are expected to develop more widely, with some showers being very heavy and slow-moving, increasing the risk of localised flooding. However, parts of south-east England may remain largely dry.
Drought officials have declared 71.3% of England and all of Wales to be in drought. Hard and compacted ground during drought periods can become water repellent, increasing run-off and contributing to flash flooding during intense downpours.
Temperatures are set to drop below average for the first time in weeks, with cooler air from the Arctic moving in. Scotland and Northern Ireland can expect highs of 13-18C, while England and Wales are forecast to see temperatures of 18-22C by Thursday.
Forecast models suggest no intense heat in August, but there are early indications of potential hot spells or heatwaves developing in September, particularly in the south, though this remains uncertain.
