A heavy goods vehicle (HGV) has been seized by Environment Agency officers as part of an ongoing investigation into a significant illegal waste dumping site in Bradford. The vehicle was intercepted on 8 July 2026 in a rural area straddling the Yorkshire and Lancashire border, between Todmorden and Bacup, as authorities continue their efforts to identify those responsible for the illicit operation.
The HGV is suspected of being directly involved in transporting waste to the Midland Road site, which was first reported to the Environment Agency on 1 July 2026. Investigators estimate that several thousand tonnes of mixed household and commercial waste have been illegally dumped at the location, prompting a multi-agency response to address the environmental concerns and pursue legal action.
Ben Hocking, Area Environment Manager at the Environment Agency, confirmed that the investigation is progressing rapidly. He stated that officers are pursuing various leads, with the HGV seizure representing a key development. Mr Hocking emphasised the Environment Agency's firm stance against waste crime, reiterating their commitment to collaborating with partners to apprehend those involved in such activities.
The Environment Agency is working in close conjunction with Bradford Council, West Yorkshire Police, and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Teams continue to visit the Midland Road site to thoroughly assess the type and volume of waste present and to collect crucial evidence. The landowner has been identified, and authorities are in communication with them to ensure the site is properly secured.
