Renowned video game creator Hideo Kojima has shed more light on his enigmatic horror project, 'OD', confirming a collaboration with acclaimed director Jordan Peele. Kojima, known for his groundbreaking work on titles like 'Metal Gear Solid' and 'Death Stranding', revealed that he is striving to redefine the horror genre in gaming, aiming for an intensity that surpasses anything previously experienced.
First teased at The Game Awards 2023, 'OD' has been described by Kojima as a horror anthology bringing together an 'Avengers' assembly of creative talent. Beyond Peele's involvement, there are suggestions that other prominent horror directors such as Mike Flanagan ('The Haunting Of Hill House') and Ari Aster ('Midsommar') could also be contributing to the project. The game is set to star Hunter Schafer from 'Euphoria', Sophia Lillis from 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves', and veteran actor Udo Kier.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kojima explained that the concept for 'OD' emerged during his solo work on 'Death Stranding'. He expressed a desire to innovate, stating, "I wanted to do something new. I wanted to do something different. I can’t reveal much detail, but it’s something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system." This ambition was met with scepticism from many in the industry, with Kojima noting that numerous companies dismissed his vision as "crazy" and unfeasible.
Ultimately, Xbox emerged as the sole development partner willing to embrace Kojima's unconventional ideas. He elaborated on his goal for the game, saying, "I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached." Despite the focus on extreme horror, Kojima also hinted at an innovative system designed to assist players who might find the experience too overwhelming, enabling them to continue playing rather than abandoning the game.
While a release date for 'OD' remains undisclosed, Kojima is also concurrently developing 'Physint', an "action espionage" title not expected to launch until 2030. The emphasis on pushing boundaries in 'OD' aligns with Kojima's reputation for experimental and narrative-driven gaming experiences, suggesting a significant new venture for the industry.
