A treasure trove of UK plant life, spanning nearly two centuries, is being brought to life in the digital age. Dating back to 1797 and linked to Charles Darwin's network, a staggering collection of over 10,000 dried and pressed plant specimens is about to become a global research resource.
The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, is leading the digitisation effort. This includes historic plants gathered by Samuel Pickworth Woodward, a professor at the college who corresponded with Darwin. By photographing and digitally cataloguing these specimens, scientists from around the world will gain access to this valuable archive, allowing new research into pressing issues like climate change, habitat management, and genetics.
Dr. Kelly Hemmings, associate professor in ecology at the RAU, highlights the significant contribution of historic herbarium collections in tackling modern environmental challenges. Until digitised, the data contained within these handwritten records remains largely inaccessible – a "hidden" natural heritage. The RAU's collection is particularly important as an early example established within an agricultural education institution, offering unique insights into historical plant life in Gloucestershire and beyond.
The RAU's digitisation project forms part of a £155 million national initiative to connect approximately one million specimens across various UK collections. This centralised hub will enable researchers to compare plants from today with those pressed centuries ago, helping identify shifts in flowering times and other biodiversity changes caused by climate change – a crucial factor for both current research and future preservation.
Cassie Newland, associate professor of cultural heritage at the RAU, stresses the importance of making such archives readily available. "Only when their information can transition from 'dusty drawers' into active research, teaching, and broader discussions can we truly unlock their potential for international study," she says.
