HM Land Registry and Ordnance Survey (OS) have announced a new collaboration to transform the property market by enhancing data accessibility and innovation. The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together over the next three years.

The partnership aims to reduce friction for citizens and businesses, boost confidence in property rights, and support government policy and economic growth. HM Land Registry, which maintains the official record of land ownership in England and Wales, seeks to make its data easier to access and connect with other property market data.

OS data is already integral to the land registration process, with its information used daily by over 4,500 caseworkers to maintain the Title (Land) Register. The collaboration will include strategic alignment, sharing insights, leveraging opportunities for data distribution, and exchanging knowledge and best practices.

Tina Kennedy, Chief Customer Officer at OS, stated that a more efficient property market is vital for the UK economy, helping people move home and supporting development. Lynne Nicholson, Deputy Director for Data at HM Land Registry, expressed anticipation for building a shared vision for trusted data to benefit customers.

The initiative supports the government's 2024-2026 strategic plan to deliver 1.5 million new homes across England. It also aims to support the regeneration of communities and a strong property market, which is valued at nearly £9 trillion in England and Wales.

Why this matters: The collaboration aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of the property market, which is a significant part of the UK economy.
