HMRC investigations into the UK's football industry reportedly generated an extra £110m in tax last season, according to new data. This figure comes from FOI data gathered by accounting firm UHY Hacker Young.
A total of 68 tax investigations were initiated in the year to April, targeting players, clubs, and agents. This marks a decrease from 118 investigations in the previous accounting period.
The additional tax secured included £13m from 40 investigations against players, £87m from 11 cases involving clubs, and £10m from 17 investigations into agents. The amount from agents' investigations increased from £2m the year prior.
Legislative changes mean that image rights payments are scheduled to be taxed as employment income from April 2027. An HMRC spokesperson stated, "Our aim is for everyone to pay the tax that’s legally due, no matter who they are. We continue to work with the football industry to ensure the right tax is paid.”
