Hodgkinson admits nerves over speedsuit debut in London

Keely Hodgkinson said she was a "little nervous" to debut her new Nike speedsuit at the Athlos meet in London, where she won the 800 metres in 1:56.40.

  • Hodgkinson won the 800 metres at the Athlos meet at StoneX Stadium in 1 minute 56.40 seconds.
  • She said the all-female event was the perfect place to debut the Catwoman-like, hooded, part-backless kit.
  • She claimed 65,000 US dollars from the prize pot.

Keely Hodgkinson admitted she was a "little nervous" to walk out in her new Nike speedsuit in London, but felt the all-female Athlos meet was the ideal place to debut the kit.

The 24-year-old Olympic 800m champion dominated the 800 metres at the StoneX Stadium on Friday night in sunglasses and an all-black, Catwoman-like, hooded, part-backless ensemble with a ponytail cutout and long sleeves.

"I'm honoured they let me put this on show," Hodgkinson said. "I was a little nervous, walking out. The shades helped me block out the noise, but it was really fun and it's something I'll remember forever."

She said the suit had been about a year in the making with the Nike innovation team, describing it as "a mixture of fashion, speed and science all coming together".

Hodgkinson revealed one compromise during development: "The science was like technically with the air drag you're slower with your hair out, but I was like, 'that's a non-negotiable. My hair is staying out'."

Asked whether the style might be widely worn by the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, she said: "We might know some things that people don't."

Hodgkinson won in one minute 56.40 seconds to claim 65,000 US dollars from the prize pot.
