British athlete Keely Hodgkinson has made a strong return to competition, easing into the 800m final at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships. In her first race since winning silver at last month's European Championships, the 24-year-old recorded the quickest time across both semi-finals, finishing in 1:57.57.
Hodgkinson, who had skipped recent Diamond League events due to hamstring discomfort, led from the front and finished well ahead of American Addison Wiley and Australia's Sarah Billings. European champion Audrey Werro won the second semi-final, setting up a highly anticipated clash with Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol.
The competition in Budapest features a substantial $10 million total prize pot, with individual champions set to receive $150,000. Elsewhere on the opening night, Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the high jump, Jakob Ingebrigtsen secured the 5000m, and Masai Russell was victorious in the 100m hurdles.
Britain's mixed 4x100m relay team finished third, while Matt Hudson-Smith qualified for the 400m final.
