A team of scientists is preparing to install cameras on the Hollywood Sign as part of an AI fire-detection service. The cameras, developed in collaboration with Torch Systems, will use solar-powered sensors to identify smoke from miles away.
The sign is located in Griffith Park, a large municipal park in Los Angeles, which is considered a significant ecological area. The park is home to approximately 200 species of birds, 50 species of butterflies, and 40 species of mammals.
Fire is identified as the area's largest anticipated risk, particularly due to visitors potentially bringing lit cigarettes into the park. The hillside and its animal habitat also face challenges from earthquakes, climate change, and changing rainfall.
The Hollywood Sign Trust, caretakers of the sign, are also developing a plan with the city to plant more native California flora near the sign.
