UK households are turning to air conditioning as never before, with companies reporting a surge in demand following record-breaking heatwaves. In Tamworth, Aircon Services has seen domestic inquiries jump by 300% over the past six years, while Aervue Air Conditioning in Birmingham is working flat out to meet the growing number of requests.
The impetus for this boom comes after a sweltering June that saw temperatures reach 36.7C, prompting widespread disruption and school closures. Traditionally British homes are designed to retain heat, making them susceptible to overheating during prolonged periods of high temperatures – an issue set to worsen as the National Housing Federation predicts 90% of UK homes could overheat by 2050.
As indoor temperatures consistently exceed 25C to 27C, health issues such as heat exhaustion and cardiovascular problems become increasingly common. Public 'cool spaces' have offered respite, but many homeowners are now opting for permanent solutions within their properties. Jasheem Benson's business is "manic" with sales doubling since March and staff working seven days a week.
The cost of installing air conditioning can vary significantly – a unit for a small bedroom might cost around £1,500, while a comprehensive whole-home system could reach up to £6,500. Despite the investment, many homeowners are now seeing this as essential for comfort and well-being. Marc Newbold highlighted that units are built to last for approximately 15 years, making them a long-term investment – with only 4% of homes in England currently equipped with air conditioning.
The surge in demand has created logistical challenges for companies, with Benson's business fully booked until the end of August due to delays in supplier deliveries. He urges customers to be patient and book ahead as climate conditions suggest similar heatwaves are likely in future years – a proactive approach reflecting a wider recognition among the public that adapting homes for hotter weather is crucial.
