Racing fans in the UK will have their eyes on Sha Tin this Wednesday as Hong Kong observes its Reunification Race Day, a public holiday event expected to attract a significant turnout. The competitive 11-race programme kicks off at 9.00am British time, offering a morning of high-stakes racing from Asia.
The day's highlights include two major handicap races: the Hong Kong Reunification Cup, run over seven furlongs and scheduled for 11.00am, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup, a five-furlong sprint due off at 12.05pm. Beyond the racing, the event in Hong Kong will feature live music and various prizes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
A key figure to watch for UK punters will be local jockey Vincent Ho, who has a busy schedule with rides in eight of the 11 races. Ho made a comeback to racing seven months ago after a serious injury last February. Despite a cautious approach to his rides this season, he has secured 35 wins, placing him joint sixth in the jockeys’ championship.
Ho's partnership with trainer Francis Lui has been particularly successful, yielding 16 wins this season. They team up with Invincible Shield in the Hong Kong Reunification Cup at 11.00am. The five-year-old, a son of I Am Invincible, is considered a strong contender. Having previously won over seven furlongs and showing strong finishes despite previous interference, Invincible Shield is now down in class and benefits from a favourable draw in gate one, which should allow him to be closer to the pace and launch a winning challenge.
Later in the day, at 12.05pm, Ho takes an eye-catching ride for the Caspar Fownes stable aboard Dancing Classics in the Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup. With regular rider Joao Moreira suspended, Ho has been booked to partner the five-year-old. Dancing Classics, a former course and distance winner, is expected to show significant improvement after a seven-month break and a recent performance at Happy Valley where he did not have a clear run. Adding to the excitement, Hong Kong superstar singer and owner Aaron Kwok will be present, which is expected to ensure the horse is in prime condition for the race.
The opposition in both feature races is formidable, with horses such as Storm Rider, Top Dragon, Ka Ying Attack, and Public Attention competing in the Reunification Cup, the latter being considered a principal threat from the in-form Brett Crawford stable.
