A heartwarming tale of love and dedication has unfolded at Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield, where staff went above and beyond to make a cancer patient's dream come true. In an extraordinary display of compassion and organisation, the hospice team transformed their courtyard into a wedding venue for Karen Glossop, 58, and her long-term partner Stephen Glossop, 57, just seven hours after receiving their request.
The couple from Eckington in Derbyshire had been waiting to tie the knot since getting engaged but were forced to put their plans on hold when Karen's cancer diagnosis took a turn for the worse. With her health declining rapidly, they feared that their dream of marrying might slip away. However, after discussing their wishes with hospice staff, a plan was put in motion to bring their special day forward.
Stephen Glossop, a retired lorry driver and Karen's partner of 33 years, expressed his gratitude to the team at Ashgate Hospice for making their wedding a reality. 'It's always been our intention to get married,' he said, 'but life just got in the way.' The couple shares four children – Kym, Luke, Rebecca, and Samantha – and five grandchildren, but this day was all about Karen.
The rapid organisation of the ceremony was made possible by the dedication of hospice staff and the generosity of local businesses. These contributions included flowers, photography, a wedding cake prepared by Ashgate Hospice kitchen staff member Kelly Sydenham, and a buffet for the guests. A total of 22 family members and friends were able to attend the short-notice ceremony, creating a truly unforgettable experience for Karen.
Kayleigh Peacock, senior staff nurse at Ashgate Hospice, reflected on the privilege of being part of such an important life event for Karen and Stephen. She acknowledged the collective effort and generosity that made it possible, highlighting the hospice's commitment to supporting patients' personal wishes during difficult times.
