The dragon roars loud, but its flames aren't as fierce as they used to be. The eagerly anticipated third season of HBO's 'House of the Dragon' has landed with a respectable 21.5 million viewers in its initial three days, but this is an eight per cent drop from the 23.4 million who watched on to the second season's debut. We're talking about a show that was always going to have high expectations after its critically-acclaimed first run in 2022 and follow-up in 2024.
The numbers are not as scorching hot as they once were, but it's still a substantial audience – and one that's likely to make the show's creators and network pretty chuffed. This dip was perhaps anticipated by industry insiders, who'll know all about the natural ebb and flow of viewership. But what's interesting is that the second season saw its numbers triple in the run-up to this latest instalment. It's a trend that points to fans re-familiarising themselves with previous episodes or newbies catching up before diving back into Westeros.
With an eight-episode season, we're promised weekly doses of high-stakes drama until early August – and it's going to be worth the wait. Created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal, 'House of the Dragon' has already won over critics and audiences alike with its intricate narrative and production values that are simply on a par with its predecessor, 'Game of Thrones'. It's no wonder the show's been nominated for all sorts of top industry gongs.
And before we know it – or rather, in 2028 – we'll be treated to a fourth and final season. Patience will be required, but trust us, it'll be worth the wait. The extended gap between seasons is par for the course when you're working with fantasy productions on this scale.
