Thousands of households living near new or upgraded electricity pylons are set to receive discounts on their electricity bills, with payments scheduled to begin next year. The government today, 12 August, unveiled the first projects expected to be part of its bill discount scheme.
Communities in over 40 locations, from the Scottish Highlands to the south of England, could benefit from hosting new grid infrastructure. Those living within 500 metres of these projects are expected to receive £2,500 off their electricity bills over a 10-year period.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated that upgrading Britain's electricity grid is crucial for delivering secure, homegrown energy and fostering economic growth. He added that the scheme aims to ensure communities hosting pylons benefit directly from this vital national infrastructure.
The 43 transmission projects announced today represent the first phase, with further projects anticipated as the scheme rolls out. It is expected that hundreds of thousands of homes will ultimately benefit from the scheme over the next decade.
Discounts will apply once projects have secured all necessary consents and main construction works have commenced, specifically for projects where construction began on or after 10 March 2025. Most eligible households will receive the discount automatically on their electricity bill every six months via their energy supplier, though some may need to apply.
