Hovland, the 2023 Fedex Cup champion, secured his share of the lead with a four-under 66, including a birdie on the final hole. Gerard had previously set the clubhouse pace with a five-under 65, highlighted by a 78-foot birdie putt on the seventh green.
Just one shot behind, Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup are joint-second at nine under. World number one Scottie Scheffler is two shots back at eight under, after a round of 67. Cameron Young, who won the Players Championship in March, also sits at eight under following a scintillating 62 that featured seven birdies and an eagle.
England's Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick are firmly in contention, three strokes adrift at seven under overall. Rose delivered a bogey-free 65. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, the Masters champion, is tied for 23rd on three under and will need to make significant headway on Saturday. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre had a challenging day, finishing his second round six-over 76.
