Norway's Viktor Hovland has clinched the Travelers Championship title following a tense play-off victory against world number one Scottie Scheffler. The dramatic conclusion saw Hovland emerge triumphant on the first extra hole, securing a significant win and a prize of £2.72 million.
Hovland, 28, had entered the final round with a single-shot lead and appeared poised to seal the win on the 18th hole. However, his 25-foot birdie putt narrowly missed, resulting in a one-under 69 for the round and bringing him level with Scheffler at 21-under-par. This set the stage for a nail-biting play-off.
The Norwegian's success was met with enthusiastic support from a dedicated group of Norwegian World Cup fans, who had travelled from Boston to TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. Their 'viking row' chants provided a unique atmosphere as Hovland navigated the pressure of the final day.
Reflecting on his victory, Hovland expressed his relief and satisfaction: "It's been stressful, but it's unbelievable. I knew I had to bring out my best to have a chance of beating Scottie, and I couldn't be happier. I know how good I can get and I keep pushing myself and wanting to get better." He added that he was pleased with how he overcame a difficult start on Thursday.
Scheffler, who finished alongside Hovland at 21-under, with Collin Morikawa a shot behind at 20-under, praised his competitor. "I've been playing golf with Viktor for a long time. We've had some good battles in college and out here as a pro. He has so much talent," Scheffler commented, highlighting Hovland's consistent ball-striking and dedication.
The victory marks a significant moment for Hovland, adding another prestigious title to his career. The Norwegian contingent on the course will now turn their attention to the World Cup, where Norway is scheduled to play against Ivory Coast on Tuesday in Dallas, coincidentally Scheffler's hometown.
