Super League club Huddersfield Giants have announced a significant event for their fans next month, offering free admission to their home game against Catalans Dragons. The fixture, scheduled for Saturday, 8 August 2026, at the Accu Stadium, will also serve as the platform for the club to unveil its much-anticipated plans for where it will play home matches in the 2027 season and beyond.
The West Yorkshire side is set to depart the Accu Stadium at the conclusion of the current season. This ground has been their home since 1994, shared with League One football club Huddersfield Town. The announcement comes amidst a challenging period for the Giants, both on and off the pitch. The club is currently at the bottom of the Super League table, having secured only two victories from 19 matches this year, suffering 12 consecutive losses.
The search for a new home has been fraught with difficulties. Last month, owner Ken Davy withdrew his bid to acquire The Shay stadium in Halifax, subsequently stepping down as chairman earlier in July. Further complicating matters, the club's aspirations for a new purpose-built ground within the local area encountered a significant hurdle in June when the local council indicated that the Giants' preferred site was not designated for sports development.
Chairman Ralph Rimmer addressed the situation on the club's website, stating, "Despite extensive talks with the local authority, all avenues for an easily developable site within the town perimeter have been exhausted within the necessary timeframe." He reiterated the club's long-term ambition: "However, the vision for the Giants remains the same: a consistently dominant Super League force, both on and off the field producing sell-out crowds in its own venue."
Huddersfield Town took sole ownership of the Accu Stadium in September of last year, further solidifying the Giants' need to secure a new venue. The upcoming free-entry match is expected to draw a large crowd, eager not only to support their team but also to hear directly from the club about its future direction and the location of its new home ground.
