Hundreds of orthopaedic patients, mostly children, suffered "harm" at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, according to a report. The hospital is currently reviewing cases handled by a surgeon who was suspended last year.
Of the 994 patients who have undergone an initial clinical review, 209 (21%) were found to have "experienced harm". The majority of these, 139, were children when they received elective surgery. Forty-seven cases were classified as severe, and one was fatal.
Surgeon Kuldeep Stohr was suspended by Addenbrooke's Hospital in March 2024 due to concerns that surgeries were "below the expected standard". Nicola Ayton, chief executive at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH), stated she was "deeply sorry" to the affected patients and families.
Thirty-one patients have required additional care related to the incident, and 60 patients and family members have accessed psychological support. An external clinical review, led by Andrew Kennedy KC, is expected to be completed later in 2026.
