  • A constitutional amendment in June will dismantle the patronage system funding the Danube Institute.
  • The Danube Institute was founded in 2013 with state funds redirected by the Orbán government.

The Danube Institute, a Budapest-based thinktank known as a central hub for the 'postliberal' movement, faces dismantling after Viktor Orbán was ousted in a landslide election in April. In June, the new Hungarian parliament passed a constitutional amendment to dismantle the patronage system that funds the institute, as well as MCC Brussels.

Founded in 2013 with state funds redirected by the Orbán government, the institute has been associated with conservative thinkers and hosted events featuring figures such as American podcaster Dave Rubin and Dutch provocateur Eva Vlaardingerbroek.

American journalist and historian Anne Applebaum has stated that the Danube Institute exists to make the Hungarian government presentable to the outside world. She also wrote that the Orbán regime had "created a political system in which no opposition party could possibly win."
