Irish mixed martial arts fighter Ian Machado Garry has revealed he is already planning for his first title defence, even before stepping into the octagon to challenge for the UFC welterweight belt. Machado Garry is scheduled to face current champion Islam Makhachev on 15 August 2026, headlining UFC 330 in Philadelphia. This highly anticipated bout pits two formidable fighters against each other, with Machado Garry's pre-fight confidence a notable talking point.
Makhachev, 34, is widely regarded as the UFC's pound-for-pound number one fighter. He previously dominated the lightweight division, setting a record for the most title defences before successfully moving up to welterweight. His victory over Jack Della Maddalena at Madison Square Garden secured him the welterweight strap, extending his professional winning streak to 16 bouts since his only career loss. Makhachev's wrestling prowess is a significant factor in his success, making him a formidable opponent for any challenger.
Machado Garry, 28, boasts a professional record of 16 wins and only one defeat. His sole loss came in December 2024 against Shavkat Rakhmonov, in a fight many viewed as a number one contender's match. However, Rakhmonov has been sidelined by injury since, allowing Machado Garry to earn his shot at the title after securing two consecutive victories against Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad in April and November of last year, respectively. Five years after his UFC debut, the Irishman, nicknamed "The Future," believes this is his moment to claim gold.
Speaking on the High Performance podcast, Machado Garry articulated his mindset: "All of those things go through my mind, and it’s the same with this fight now, when I’m going in to fight the world champion; I’m already thinking about: ‘Who do I want to defend against?'' He emphasised the importance of strategic foresight, ensuring he is prepared for post-fight interviews and his next steps. This level of confidence, while potentially seen as audacious by some, highlights the competitive spirit driving the Irish fighter.
The upcoming fight is not just a title challenge but an opportunity for Machado Garry to solidify his place among the sport's elite. He acknowledged Makhachev's credentials, stating, "I know how good Islam Makhachev is. He’s a two-weight champion. He’s the most-successful lightweight champion of all time and had the most lightweight defences of all time. He is the current welterweight champion of the world." Machado Garry believes that defeating such a decorated opponent would undeniably prove his greatness and establish him as one of the best fighters globally.
