The Ibiza dance scene, once synonymous with sun-kissed beaches and carefree nights, has been tarnished by allegations of a deep-rooted problem: international drug trafficking. At its alleged epicentre is Hugo Bianco, an Argentinian DJ who was a staple on the island's club circuit, frequenting events like Marco Carola's Music On parties and renowned venues such as Amnesia and Pacha Ibiza.
A joint investigation, dubbed Operation Pertinax, conducted by Spain's Guardia Civil and US Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), has identified Bianco as a key figure in the operation. The investigation suggests that between September 2019 and August 2020, the network trafficked significant quantities of MDMA, cocaine, ketamine, and cannabis across the Balearic Islands.
According to court documents, part of these shipments were transported to Miami via recruited couriers who concealed illicit substances within luggage and seemingly legitimate containers. Bianco is accused of leveraging his connections in both Ibiza and Miami to establish a sophisticated route for drug transportation and distribution between Spain and the United States.
The High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJB) has upheld a nine-and-a-half-year prison sentence against Bianco, affirming an earlier decision by the Provincial Court. The TSJB dismissed defence arguments that Bianco played a peripheral role in the drug trafficking operation and maintained the validity of wiretapped phone conversations as evidence.
The court also imposed a hefty fine of €3 million (approximately £2.59 million) alongside the prison term. Bianco, aged 54, is believed to be residing in Florida and has been declared a 'fugitive from justice' by authorities, along with two other suspects involved in the case.
