Real Madrid has confirmed the acquisition of French centre-back Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer. The 27-year-old defender, whose departure from Liverpool was previously announced, has penned a four-year contract with the Spanish giants, committing him to the club until June 30, 2030. This move sees Konaté become a key part of Real Madrid's significant squad overhaul.
Konaté's arrival follows a busy week of recruitment for Real Madrid, as he becomes the third player to join from the Premier League. Earlier in the week, Spain international left-back Marc Cucurella completed a £52 million transfer from Chelsea, and Bernardo Silva is also set to join as a free agent from Manchester City. These high-profile signings underscore Real Madrid's ambition to revitalise their squad after two consecutive trophyless seasons, a commitment made by recently re-elected president Florentino Perez.
During his tenure at Anfield, Konaté made 183 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals. He was part of the squad that secured a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two League Cups after joining from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021. Despite initial expectations that a new deal would be reached midway through the season, negotiations ultimately broke down, leading to his departure when his contract concluded on June 30.
His exit is part of a broader period of transition for Liverpool, who are also seeing star forward Mohamed Salah and left-back Andrew Robertson depart, alongside head coach Arne Slot. The club, which finished fifth in the Premier League, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, has moved quickly to appoint Andoni Iraola as Slot’s replacement and has agreed a £60 million deal to sign 20-year-old French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.
Real Madrid's rebuild also sees the return of Jose Mourinho for a second spell as head coach. However, the club has faced challenges in other transfer pursuits, notably being unable to secure Argentina forward Julian Alvarez from cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid, whose sarcastic rejection of a £129 million bid highlighted the competitive nature of the transfer market. Konaté, meanwhile, was an unused substitute for France in their recent World Cup 2026 qualifier against Senegal.
