Aziz Abdul, the 25-year-old grandson of Idi Amin, saw his Commonwealth Games boxing debut end in disqualification today. Abdul was competing in a super-heavyweight bout against England's Damar Thomas, 21, when he was disqualified in the third round for head-butting his opponent.
At the time of the incident, Abdul was trailing 20-16 on the scorecards. Following the disqualification, the Ugandan boxer launched a verbal assault on the referee, claiming the decision was unfair and that there were many unjudged fouls from his opponent.
Abdul also refused to speak to a journalist from the Press Association after the fight, with a Ugandan team official clarifying that this was due to the journalist's past writings about his grandfather. Before the fight, Abdul had stated that his grandfather's achievements had inspired him and that he was proud of him.
Thomas is now guaranteed a medal following the fight. Abdul, also known as Aziz Ringo, insisted he did not intentionally head-butt his opponent and expressed a desire for a future rematch.
