IDLES singer Joe Talbot publicly acknowledged the profound influence of New York's Interpol during their performance at Bilbao BBK Live 2026. Speaking to the audience on Saturday, 11 July, Talbot expressed his gratitude and admiration, stating that Interpol was one of the primary reasons he decided to form a band. The Bristol-based post-punk band was performing on the main stage, a platform they shared with Interpol earlier that same afternoon.
Addressing the crowd in the Basque Country, Talbot shared, "Thanks for making us feel so at home and so loved so far from home. It’s a dream to share a stage with one of the main reasons I’m in a band – Interpol and [Interpol’s touring member] Matt from The Walkmen. It’s a huge privilege and a f***ing dream." Interpol's set was part of the festival's closing day, which also featured performances from Spanish rapper Dellafuente, Lily Allen, and HorsegiirL, among others.
IDLES' set kicked off with a new track titled 'Levitator', offering a glimpse into their forthcoming sixth album. This song, which the band has been using to open their shows throughout the summer, includes lyrics that directly confront racism and explore themes of righteous anger. The band's guitarist, Mark Bowen, had previously hinted last month that their new material was well underway and promised to be their "most exciting" album to date, suggesting a return to the sound of their earlier work.
Bowen elaborated on the writing process, describing it as a "back to basics" approach involving all five band members collaborating directly in the studio. He noted that the creative process was often characterised by robust discussions and disagreements, which he considered a positive sign. "If it’s too nice, then it’s not sick. It’s always more sick if someone is not getting what they want!" Bowen told NME, speaking at the Ivor Novello Awards where he was nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
