Jigsaw, the independent estate and letting agency based in Selby, has announced a significant shift in its business structure, transferring ownership to its employees via an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). The company stated that this strategic decision is designed to safeguard its future as an independent entity while also formally acknowledging the substantial contributions of its staff over more than two decades.
The agency, which began as Jigsaw Letting in 2001 by Sandra Widdrington, expanded into residential sales with Jigsaw Move in 2014, when Sandra's daughter, Sharon Northcott, joined with her husband, Davy Northcott. Rather than pursuing an external sale, the Northcotts opted for employee ownership, citing a desire to preserve the agency's established culture and independence. This model ensures that the team who have helped build the business will now have a direct stake in its ongoing success.
Sharon Northcott emphasised the people-centric ethos of Jigsaw. She highlighted the long-standing loyalty and commitment of many team members, who have been instrumental in the company's growth and reputation. Northcott explained that the EOT is a way to reciprocate that dedication, allowing employees to share in the future prosperity of the business they have helped cultivate.
The transition is not expected to alter the day-to-day operations of the agency, with both Sharon and Davy Northcott continuing in active roles. Sharon Northcott confirmed her intention to remain with Jigsaw as a consultant for many years, underscoring their continued personal investment in the business, its team, and its clients. This continuity aims to reassure clients that the familiar faces and trusted service will remain.
An oversight board will manage the new EOT, comprising Sharon Northcott, Davy Northcott, Alix Simpkin, Beckie Atton, and Connie Bell. The founders believe that by choosing employee ownership, they are not only protecting the unique culture of Jigsaw but also securing its future, ensuring that the individuals who have been the backbone of the company for so long are now integral to its ongoing journey and success.
