Fifa President Gianni Infantino has outlined plans for reform within world football's governing body, proposing an independent external review of its governance framework. In a letter sent to all 211 member associations and Fifa Council members, Infantino also suggested a direct, structured, and time-limited consultation process.
The consultation would involve confederations, member associations, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen Fifa's decision-making. This follows significant pressure on Infantino to resign after he was forced to abandon plans to sell a 20 per cent stake in Fifa tournaments, including the World Cup, to private investors.
European governing body Uefa, along with the Asian confederation and Concacaf, had called for Infantino to step down. Despite the ongoing controversy, the 56-year-old Swiss has reiterated his intention to stand for re-election, stating he remains "fully committed to leading Fifa."
The Football Association chair, Debbie Hewitt, had previously written to Infantino, calling for an independent review into the World Cup private investor plan and the handling of the Folarin Balogun case.
