Fifa president Gianni Infantino has failed to respond to a request from the United States House Judiciary Committee to appear before it or provide documents. The deadline for a response passed more than a month ago, according to the Press Association.
Democrat Jamie Raskin, the committee's ranking minority member, initiated an investigation on July 26 into what he described as "a sustained campaign" by Fifa to curry favour with US president Donald Trump. The letter from Raskin alleged attempts to gain favours, including dropping high-profile corruption cases, and accused Fifa of "gouging" American consumers with "exorbitant" World Cup ticket prices.
Infantino was asked to reply by August 9, produce requested files, and contact the committee to arrange an interview. However, no response had been received by Thursday. As no subpoena was issued, Infantino faces no criminal penalties for not responding to Raskin's request.
Separately, Fifa is expected to receive an analysis today assessing the feasibility of expanding the World Cup to 64 teams. A research document seen on July 30 set an August 14 deadline to appoint an agency for the study, with the final analysis requested by September 11.
