An intruder was arrested on Thursday morning after an alarming confrontation at the New York City studios of the popular US morning programme, the Today show. The individual reportedly bypassed security at NBC's Rockefeller Plaza before allegedly lunging at co-host Craig Melvin and shouting a racial slur.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. Eastern Time. The man reportedly first enquired about long-serving Today host Al Roker before encountering Mr Melvin. He then allegedly followed Mr Melvin into a restricted area, where the confrontation took place.
Staff and security personnel quickly intervened, detaining the man within the studio complex. Officials have confirmed that no one was injured during the altercation. The incident was not broadcast live on air, and the identity of the detained individual has not yet been publicly released.
NBC has not yet commented on how the intruder managed to gain entry to the secure studio environment. Similarly, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has been approached for further details regarding the incident. Mr Melvin has not publicly addressed the security breach, though he did repost an image on Instagram shortly after, showing him with actors Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland.
This incident raises concerns about the security protocols at major media organisations, particularly those with high-profile personalities. While no one was harmed, the ability of an uninvited individual to access a restricted area and confront a host is likely to prompt a review of existing measures.
