Racial tensions flared in New York's Midtown on Thursday morning when an unauthorised individual allegedly hurled a racist slur at Craig Melvin on live television. The shocking incident unfolded during the taping of NBC's Today show at 30 Rockefeller Center, prompting a swift response from New York Police Department officers.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 9am following reports of a disorderly person, with authorities confirming that an unidentified individual was taken into custody by 9:19am. An investigation is ongoing and no injuries have been reported. According to police officials, the man managed to bypass security protocols and gained access through a secured area.
Initial reports suggest the intruder initially targeted long-time weatherman Al Roker, who like Melvin is Black, before allegedly turning his attention to Melvin, leading to the verbal assault. Sources cited by CNN indicate that the individual was unable to locate Roker and instead sought out Melvin on live television.
Despite the disturbing incident, both Craig Melvin and Al Roker were back on air just 15 minutes after the intruder was removed from the set. Neither host addressed the security breach during the broadcast, with Melvin continuing to anchor the show as usual.
The security lapse raises questions about the effectiveness of NBC's enhanced security measures, implemented earlier this year following the high-profile abduction of co-host Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, from her Arizona home on 1 February. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of television personalities and their teams, particularly in high-traffic areas such as New York City.
