An investigation is continuing into a collision that killed a delivery driver in Burscough, West Lancashire, on Saturday. The incident occurred at approximately 15:00 GMT when a train travelling from Southport to Manchester collided with what is understood to be a supermarket delivery vehicle.
The crossing, located off Martin Lane and Whitehouse Lane, is a user-worked crossing with miniature stop lights. Network Rail classifies it with a risk rating of B4, indicating a "high individual risk" and a "very high collective risk".
Local residents have informed the BBC that the gate on the crossing is reportedly left open at times. Network Rail, British Transport Police, and the Rail Accident Investigation Board are involved in the ongoing investigation.
A Network Rail spokesman confirmed the line between Wigan and Southport remains closed following the incident. British Transport Police stated that enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened.
