A delivery van driver died after their vehicle was struck by a passenger train at the Martin Lane user worked level crossing in Lancashire on 29 August 2026. The collision, which occurred at approximately 3:15 PM, also resulted in minor injuries to two train passengers.
Significant damage was reported to the delivery van, the train, and lineside infrastructure. The Martin Lane crossing is equipped with manually operated gates, signage, a miniature stop light system, and telephones for users to contact a signaller.
An independent investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events leading to the accident. This will include examining the actions of those involved, any previous incidents at the crossing, and Network Rail's risk management strategies for user worked crossings. The findings and any safety recommendations will be published upon the conclusion of the investigation.
