The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has published its second roadmap for the new patents service, outlining planned improvements and enhancements over the coming months. The service was launched on 1 April 2026, and since then, there have been around 10,000 transactions, 3,500 patent applications, and 3,000 new users.
The IPO has committed to continuous improvement of the service, working closely with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and users to shape and prioritise this work. According to the roadmap, the service has already seen improvements, including the restoration of patent publishing to full capacity, the payment of grant fees via the new service, and the introduction of a new payment receipt email for customers filing new applications.
The highest priority improvements currently being worked on include patent application improvements, such as changes to make it easier to select the correct representative for the account and playback of application details and documents immediately after submission. Other improvements, such as correspondence and search enhancements, are expected to be completed within the next six to nine months.
