Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has defended the club's summer transfer strategy, stating their priority was to sign quality players rather than focusing on quantity. This comes as Liverpool recorded the highest net spend in the Premier League.
The club's significant outlay included Bradley Barcola, signed for a potential £123m, who joins a frontline featuring Alexander Isak (£125m) and Florian Wirtz (£116m). Barcola could make his debut at Ipswich on Friday, despite not having played for Paris Saint-Germain before his move on Monday.
Despite not signing a right-back, defensive midfielder, or natural right-winger, Iraola believes the club's approach was correct. He indicated that Barcola could be deployed in Mohamed Salah’s former position. Iraola confirmed that other potential signings were rejected for various reasons, including sporting suitability or economic viability.
Iraola expressed satisfaction with the current squad, particularly the four wingers: Barcola, Victor Muñoz, Cody Gakpo, and Rio Ngumoha. He believes these players can adequately cover both wing positions, noting that he is accustomed to wingers playing on both sides from his previous teams.
