The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has confirmed there are "currently no plans or discussions" for Ireland to play a Six Nations match in the United States. This statement, issued on Friday, addresses earlier comments from World Rugby's chief executive, Alan Gilpin.
Gilpin had indicated on Wednesday that World Rugby would support any nation wishing to move a Six Nations fixture to the US as part of efforts to grow the sport stateside. He cited an Ireland v Italy game as an example that could resonate with expatriate fans in the US and boost rugby's presence there.
However, an IRFU spokesperson stated that while the US is an important growth market for rugby, the opportunity for fans in Ireland and Italy to support their teams at home remains a central part of the competition's appeal. Ireland has previously played two well-attended games in the US against New Zealand, including a historic win in Chicago in 2016.
