Teenagers in Ireland who are 16 years old are expected to receive a €100 voucher from the government, redeemable for cultural events. This new initiative is slated for launch in next month's budget, according to RTÉ.
The voucher will allow access to cinemas, theatres, and live music venues, and will be available via digital download. If successful, the scheme may be expanded to include all 17-year-olds in the following year's budget.
Irish Minister for Arts, Media and Culture, Patrick O’Donovan, is anticipated to finalise his department's budget allocation with Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers in the coming days. The specifics of the planned €100 voucher are currently being developed by O'Donovan. It is reported that the initiative could cost the government between €7 and €8 million.
The Programme For Government committed to examining a culture card for 16 and 17-year-olds in early 2025. Some Government TDs have also advocated for the inclusion of sporting venues in the initiative. O’Donovan has explored whether the proposed culture card could also cover participatory activities such as workshops, classes, and community-based experiences.
