The cat's out of the bag: Ismail Elfath is set to take centre stage as referee for one of the biggest World Cup semi-finals in recent history – England vs Argentina in Atlanta. The highly anticipated showdown brings together two footballing powerhouses, each eyeing a spot in the final and a piece of history.
This American official has had a meteoric rise through the ranks, with a fascinating backstory to boot. Born in Morocco, Elfath upped sticks for the States at 18 after securing a coveted diversity visa. He studied hard, graduating with honours from the University of Texas in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering. But football was always his true calling – and he's been making waves ever since.
Starting out in Major League Soccer back in 2012, Elfath gradually worked his way up to become a FIFA-listed referee in 2016. His big break came at the U20 World Cup in 2019, but it was his senior debut at the Qatar World Cup in 2022 that really put him on the map – officiating three matches, including the crunch Japan-Croatia Round of 16 clash.
Now, with four fixtures under his belt in this year's tournament, Elfath is ready for the biggest test yet: leading the line at Wembley Stadium in the semi-final. His display during the group stage was a demonstration of his authority – a telling red card to Uruguay's Agustin Cannobio against Spain caught everyone's attention, and his oversight of Norway's win over Brazil in the Round of 16 will have given him valuable experience.
The assistant referees for this massive clash are Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins from the USA, while Maurizio Mariani of Italy is set to serve as the fourth official. With history on the line – not least a rekindled rivalry between England and Argentina that last saw action in 2005 – Elfath's task will be to keep the match flowing smoothly.
