The Israeli military admitted on Wednesday that its troops opened fire on a car carrying five-year-old Hind Rajab and six family members in Gaza in 2024. The military stated it has ordered a criminal investigation into the killing.
Hind Rajab and her family died after their Kia Picanto car was hit as they attempted to flee an Israeli offensive into Gaza City. Hind made a desperate three-hour phone call to the Palestinian Red Crescent on 29 January 2024, pleading for rescue. All other passengers were also killed, and their bodies were retrieved 12 days later when Israeli troops withdrew.
The Israel Defense Forces had previously denied its troops were in the area, but investigations by media and other groups found evidence strongly suggesting nearby Israeli tanks were responsible. The IDF also published reviews on Wednesday into five other high-profile incidents in Gaza.
